What is Birth Chart
A birth chart (Janma Kundali) is a map of the sky at the exact time, date, and place of your birth. It shows the positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets in the zodiac and houses. In astrology, it represents your personality, life path, karma, strengths, challenges, and timing of events.
The chart is divided into 12 houses, each representing a specific area of life:
1st House (Lagna) – Self, personality, body, appearance, overall life direction
2nd House – Wealth, speech, family, values, savings
3rd House – Courage, communication, siblings, skills, effort
4th House – Home, mother, emotions, comfort, property
5th House – Intelligence, creativity, children, education, romance
6th House – Health, enemies, debts, service, daily work
7th House – Marriage, partnerships, business relationships
8th House – Transformation, longevity, secrets, sudden events
9th House – Luck, dharma, higher knowledge, spirituality, गुरु
10th House – Career, profession, status, public image
11th House – Gains, income, desires, social circle
12th House – Losses, expenses, isolation, foreign lands, moksha
In Vedic astrology, each house has a natural owner (Karaka planet) based on the natural zodiac (Aries to Pisces). These are called natural house lords, independent of your personal Lagna.
Here is the standard list:
1st House (Aries) – Mars
2nd House (Taurus) – Venus
3rd House (Gemini) – Mercury
4th House (Cancer) – Moon
5th House (Leo) – Sun
6th House (Virgo) – Mercury
7th House (Libra) – Venus
8th House (Scorpio) – Mars (Ketu co-significator)
9th House (Sagittarius) – Jupiter
10th House (Capricorn) – Saturn
11th House (Aquarius) – Saturn (Rahu co-significator)
12th House (Pisces) – Jupiter
These owners come from the natural zodiac sequence, not your personal chart.
They indicate the default planetary influence over each life area.
In an actual birth chart, house ownership changes based on Lagna, but these natural rulers remain foundational for interpretation.
The 12 houses together represent all areas of life and form the complete life framework of astrology.
In astrology, houses form four main trine groups (triplicities) based on their spacing (every 4th house). Each group represents a specific life dimension:
